Seth gets himself kidnapped outside a cornfield after witnessing a murder. He’s forced to do more than a few gruesome chores for his captor – dispose of bodies in a salt-filled hole, lock a man inside a shipping container, beat a man to death with a penny whistle. But then they’re on the run and it’s exciting. Seth’s seeing places he’s never been, he’s got more money in his pocket than he’s ever had before. Soon the line starts to blur between captive and accomplice.
Seth’s not the first person the man ever kidnapped. There’s four of them now, just enough. Not long after Seth’s introduced to the others, they’re paddling down the Missouri River in two canoes with homemade ketamine stacked in shrink-wrapped blocks between the seats. They’re given maps and instructions and soon they’re trading drugs for cash across the Midwest.
Seth struggles to find where he fits in the group. His hands are blistered, his skin sunburned. His mind and his eyes are focused too much on Isabel when danger lurks around every bend in the river. There’s storms to look out for, angry landowners, drug addicts, thieves and police. But the biggest danger lurking is what’ll happen to them if something goes wrong, if the man doesn’t get what he wants.
